Customer Reviews

We were happy with our experience at A Better Choice Tax Preparation. Trina filed our extension and then dug in. She was patient, detailed, and took the time to explain what we would need to bring back and what she was going to get started on. She kept in contact throughout the process. I would recommend her to anyone who has complicated or not-so-simple tax filings.

My elderly mother had Trina prepare her taxes and was told she could make payments for the tax liability that was due. She has done this the past few years and Trina asked her if she wanted to do the same as last year and my said "yes". Unfortunately, someone in the office paid the entire amount due and caused my mother's bank account to be overdrawn! The office staff would not put my mom through to speak with Trina and they said there was nothing that could be done without even speaking to Trina. This pl

Trina is amazing! I've been going to her for 11 years and always get great service. She gets the job done like no one else can. If you own a business, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Trina to get the best tax help on the Central Coast. I travel all the way from Orcutt every year and just leave my car down the street to get my once a year detailing! Taxes are dreadful, but I look forward to coming in every January to see where I end up for the year. It's always better that I imagined. Thanks Trina!

I highly recommend A Better Choice Tax. Trina has done our taxes since she opened her own business. She is honest and knowledgeable. She does everything in her power to ensure your taxes are done accurately and in your favor. She knows tax law and she knows about a lot of ins and outs that work in your favor that you may not get at other large tax firms like H and R Block and the like or by doing your own taxes. I know fir some the thought of paying somebody to do your taxes seems silly when you can use tur

I just have to share this. Taxes have ALWAYS been one of my biggest fears. Still to this day. It petrifies me. I procrastinate and stay awake at night worrying. My Adhd makes it feel impossible to sit down and focus. Until?.. I met Trina Mcguire. She has taken care of me and my taxes for a few years now and I swear?. She is the best! She holds my hand through the whole process and takes over when I get overwhelmed. Trina truly cares and helping people is very important to her. Trina and David make you feel

The lady who runs this business is very knowledgeable, but she probably has too many clients. She kind of treats you like just another customer. Gives you very little advice on write-offs, and highly overpriced. Had I known how much she charges, I would have just gone elsewhere. There's a lot of good tax accountants in the area, definitely do your research before you go here, unless you're trying to overpay.

Trina McGuire is the best when it comes to taxes. She educates herself prior to every tax season and knows all the write offs for each individual group. It doesn't matter if you are self employed, a pilot, in law enforcement. Trina is the tax person you need!

Trina is amazing. Very knowledgeable and helpful. We have been going here for years and will continue. If you are looking for someone honest and caring call and make an appointment with Dave! Wonderful experience with ABC Tax.

My husband and I have been going to A Better Choice for years now. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and caring and will take the time to work around your schedule when need be. We have had difficult tax questions in the past and they've always come had an answer that is very timely and correct. We can't imagine going to anybody else other than TRINA and David.

Trina is efficient, detail oriented, knowledgeable, and finished out taxes in record time. I feel completely confident in her ability. I was referred by a friend whose been using her for a decade and she exceeded our expectations. A+

We have been working with ABC tax for more then 15 years. We moved out of state 5 years ago and continue to use ABC tax because of their knowledge, professionalism and quick response. They have always gone above and beyond to make sure our taxes are correct AND are wrote offs are correct and maximum benifit. I have emailed her as situations have changed and asked for a list of writes when I started a new business and they were on it! I highly recommend ABC for a personal and professional tax preparer.

I'm very grateful for the hard work and how the team always goes above and beyond for me when tax season comes around. That is not to mention other various times I've needed help and they have been there. I know everyone thinks their case is most important during tax season and I understand how it would be hard to manage all the different personalities that are needing tax services all at the same time, but I'm amazed at the professionalism and care for the individual the team continually shows despite the

We love This place!! I don't even know how many years we have been having Trina do our taxes. But I say it every year and I will say it again "best thing ever to sit down with Trina...and just like that taxes are done!" Simply the best!!

This is the best place to have your taxes done! I have worked with Trina for the last 4 years and she always goes way above what you expect. You can't go wrong using ABC!!!

I've been going to Trina for several years and have never had anything but great service and professionalism. Always answer when I call, never had a problem getting an appointment, always helpful and available if you need something. I would definitely recommend them for tax services.

BEWARE!!!!!! Horrible professionalism and communication. 24hrs to 2 weeks is nothing but false advertisement. 2 and a half months later and nothing. Terrible people. They do not communicate at all with their clients. Everytime I call, if I manage to talk to someone all I hear is children running in the background. Even when I came into the establishment the place of business looks nothing like a place for taxes, but more like a Daycare. Their is always children running around the few times I've been the

I love a better choice Tax! I don't know they're very professional but they have a family atmosphere. David, Trina, and Jenny are quick to answer any questions and get you through the process quickly. I go to them every year.

I have personally been going to Trina for over 10 years and even this year with unemployment, moving out of state and a million email questions sent they made it so easy! 100 percent recommend!

Trina and David are amazing, they will go above and beyond. Trina can do it all, tax preparation, accounting, payroll and much more. If you need the best in the area this is who you should go to, they will always go above and beyond.

It is so nice to have a trusted tax accountant, who makes it as stress free as possible. Trina is professional, thorough and wildly knowledgeable.

These people had the audacity to call me and lecture me about my Mom using me as dependent on her tax claim, therefore Zeroing my stimulus money. I am disabled , but most of time I manage to do all her yard work in return for living in a shed and a little electricity. Many people in our family know this is the situation. I am filing a complaint with IRS because of their shoddy practices.

I'm posting to give awareness about this business and their business practice. One of CPA's there had called one of my family members and left a very disturbing voicemail. I would not use this place even if they did taxes for free!

This is a great place to get your taxes Trina knows what she's doing and she will do all she can to get your maximum dollar back legally

She's doing our taxes for 20 yrs and she is the best ??.

Trina does a great job! We always save a ton of money!

Been going to Trina for over 10 years. Don't trust anyone else to do our taxes

Just love her services ??

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
