They did exactly what they said they would do. 100%. Everyone at Aero & Marine Tax Professionals was extremely profession and detailed -- it's obvious that they know what they're doing. Follow their instructions, to the letter, and you should be fine. There are a lot of steps to complete the process, but it's worth it!!
Tom Alston is AMAZING! He gave me excellent advice regarding my pending aircraft purchase and helped me fully understand the tax implications of ownership. Thank you!
I called in because I needed some help on a purchase of a Plane and spoke to Jullie where she walked me through the qualifications to be granted an exemption. In this instance, I do not qualify for an exemption but the knowledge she provided was invaluable on the sales tax side. Talking to Jullie was great because she really knows what she is talking about. She is well versed in what she does, and I felt confident in the advice provided. I would recommend others to take advantage of the consultation call w
I used Aero and Marine Tax Professionals in the purchase of an aircraft. They gave clear instructions and had a well organized review process along the way to be sure I was completing all of the steps and documentation that would be required. When it was time they filed the documents and followed up with the State of CA until the process was completed and the final outcome was in my favor. In short they know what they are doing and give clear guidance along the way to navigate to a successful outcome. The
I had a few tax questions and a friend recommended I contact the Aero & Marine Tax Professionals. I filled out a contact form and Tom Alston immediately called me back. His advice was excellent and was exactly what I needed. Many thanks
Don't call this company unless you want to be harassed until the end of time. While I was a yacht broker in 2018, I called this company one time for details on what services they could offer a client that may be interested in using them. My client ultimately decided to pay the California tax and have the boat in the Bay area so they could use it instead of keeping it in Mexico for a year. I stopped being a broker in 2020, and I still get calls from these people. I have talked to them several times about bei
Tom and Jullie were super helpful for a recent inquiry that I posed to them regarding a vintage aircraft being receieved as a gift and provided suggestion to prevent property tax liability on the aircraft.
I had a great experience with Tom Alston. I acquired a small aircraft and didn't know the difference between sales / use / property taxes. I attended an a Aero & Marine webinar and Tom was kind enough to answer all of my questions.
I'm in the process of purchasing (close in two weeks) a larger Turbo prop aircraft that is based in a sales/use tax aggressive state. Tom Alston of Aero & Marine was extremely helpful in helping me navigate the minefields of the various states that have their claws out. Very informed about the world of taxes related to aircraft based upon experience
I had a question about purchasing an aircraft and legally avoiding use tax, if feasible. The phone answerer took my information down, and routed me immediately to the big boss, Tom Alston. Tom patiently listened to my past tales of woe with California's BOE, and my needs for the currently planned transaction. He then explained in 25 words or less how I could entirely avoid use tax on the two transactions I had in mind. I asked if I should have him assist me with the contract? He said it would cost $1,500 to
I'm purchasing a small plane to use for my business, and I called Tom looking for advice on how to structure the purchase for tax purposes. He listened to my situation carefully, and explained the relevant laws very clearly. Together, we came up with a plan to maximize my deduction while staying strictly within the rules. Tom was extremely helpful and I'm looking forward to calling him again when I need more help in the future.
Tom is a wealth of information on all facets of Califorina Use Tax regulations. Highly recommend contacting him prior to purchasing a vehicle or vessel in California, or if you plan to bring it in to the state.
I sent an email with questions about registering an aircraft that involved tax questions unique to California. Tom made a phone call to me the same day and provided the answers I needed at no charge. He encouraged me to reach out again should the tax people try to collect money that shouldn't be assessed under California tax code. Thank you, Aero Marine Tax Pros and Tom!

I wanted to express my appreciation for the many years you were supportive and never once hesitated to answer my questions. You have been exceedingly helpful and I appreciate it and I am grateful for the opportunity to have finally been able to buy a plane and take advantage of your services. This email is in large part to let everyone know how EXCELLENT and helpful Emily Gallagher has been in her patience and explanation of the process and gentle prodding to be sure I am following the strict regimen of r
Greg was awsom to talk to. I called and got a receptionist and was immediately transferred to him no hold time at all. Greg answered my questions without hesitation or compensation. If I need more help with avoiding or understanding taxation related issues he's going to be my first call thanks Greg
Anyone who buys an airplane or boat in California needs to use Aero & Marine Tax Professionals. It's a must, over the years Tom Alston and his dedicated crew of professionals, saved the companies I have worked for tens of thousands of dollars on aircraft purchases. The process is super easy and straight forward.
I had the pleasure of using AMTP on an aircraft. The state requirements were stringent but the staff held my hand from start to finish in-order to ensure I met the requirements for the exemption I was seeking. They were responsive and provided a ton of updates later in the process when the state was dragging their feet. I will use them for all of my transactions going forward. Thanks for a great experience.
Tom was very helpful, and understands the steps needed to best address and mitigate tax liability ....certainly encourage aircraft owners to call him before you purchase your aircraft
Tom is an excellent resource on sales and use tax issues. He's been very helpful over the years with all of my aircraft purchases in the state of California.
We used this company to help us structure the purchase of our plane in a tax-efficient manner. They did an excellent job, though it wound up costing us somewhat more than we expected. Be aware that they charge for every email they write and every phone call. Perhaps this is the way it should be and we were naive to assume otherwise.
Tom and his company are a wealth of knowledge. He expertly provided legal tax guidance for my aircraft purchase last year and saved me thousands! Thank you!
repeatedly ask to stop calling, they continue to call and leave a voicemail at least twice a week. If they cannot grasp "do not call me" not sure I would trust them with my taxes!!!
Misleading company. They sent me a postcard stating "100% Success Rate Saving you Money" so I inquired with them. When they called me they stated "Oh, you needed to call us when you first purchased not after 6 months.". Not sure why they wasted my time sending me a letter based on when my plane registration had already been filed with the FAA.
Aero & Marine Tax Professionals did a great job helping us navigate a tax that we were able to avoid just by getting them information and they did the rest! Thanks again for all the help!
My experience with AERO&MARINE Tax Professionals was very straightforward. It was a cookbook approach for the client. There was a recipe of things that I needed to do and if I followed the recipe to the letter things worked out just marvelously. If anyone is thinking about buying a plane in California, or who lives in California, Tom is the 'go-to' guy for minimizing your costs and hassles with the CA use-tax.
Aero & Marine Tax Professionals have provided me with the best information about avoiding California sales and use tax on aircraft purchases. Their help and information has always been easy and simple to understand.
Outstanding service!!! I purchased two aircraft and A&MTP walked me through all the steps needed to help us with our BOE audits. We saved a very hefty sum of money. You would be crazy not to render their services.
I had some questions on the sales tax with a boat I bought oversees. They were very helpful and told me exactly what I needed to do. I just wish I contacted them sooner since there were some things I could have done before it made it to CA.
I had a unique situation arise requiring timely advice, Tom answered the phone and my questions in a matter of minutes. I will definitely be calling back in the future when I have more complex situations requiring his guidance. Highly knowledgeable and highly recommended.

Great help with aircraft tax needs.
They have called my place of work twice now, and both times was a silent call. Stop calling my place of work if you're not even going to speak.
Extremely helpful & answered all my questions. Thanks Tom!
Very poor experience recently with Thomas. Do not recommend.
These guys do a great job.

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.
Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.
A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.
Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.
Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.
Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.
Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.
Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.
Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.
During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.
Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.
Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.
For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.
Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.
Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
