Customer Reviews

I was utilizing the services of this firm for over 4 years. I was then transferred to a Deborah Perry that took over my file 2 years ago without being notified prior. I continued to use their services, despite many times that Deborah responded condescending, or not in a timely manner. They continued to render services without taking money at times or even explaining what they were doing, the costs, or really notifying me of an invoice or cost, until after the service was completed. I actually paid clos

I sent them a message yesterday, and already had an appointment scheduled for this morning. They are quick! We were able to consult over the phone so my husband and I didn't have to miss work while going into an office. They are reasonably priced, and we are pleased with the service. We spoke with Daine, who was very informative and helpful. He educated us much more than he had to, and it was very much appreciated. I highly recommend these guys.

They asked us to upload our documents to their portal. After uploading our last 3 years of tax returns, we did not hear back from them. I called after a week and they said they couldn't take on more clients. Why ask for us to upload taxes if you can?t take more clients? Waste of time and effort.

What an amazing experience! Their entire staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and true experts in their fields. Brian is the best and I highly recommend his services for your personal and business taxes.

I was in a bind. I hadn't filed taxes in 3 years, due to a divorce and other financial situations. Dain Ellsworth rolled up his sleeves and got all 3 years done in NO TIME, at a VERY REASONABLE fee, and with the UTMOST of professionalism. I can't say enough about the EMOTIONAL relief Mr. Ellsworth provided as I was SURE I would be in a very bad place. Instead, with his access he was able to provide information I have been trying to obtain for MONTHS, which got my taxes done and on their way in less than

While the people here were kind to work with, the person working on our tax return had some knowledge gaps. Specifically around SEP IRA contribution limits, differences between the SE health insurance deduction and the premium tax credit, FINCEN, and more. And then little things like misspelling one of our names, figures being entered slightly incorrectly compared to uploaded documents, etc. While we did learn some new things that reduced our tax liability somewhat, overall we didn't think this was a good v

Ellsworth Gilman & Stout have prepared my personal taxes for several years. They continue to provide me with the same honest, accurate and timely service as they do for their larger clients. I highly recommend them.

I would give zero stars if possible. They?ve been my CPAs for almost 2 years. They have failed to file my quarterly payroll on time (and cost me fees) and also screwed up my personal tax return with the IRS (penalty and then a refund). They are extremely not responsive to any of these issues. Not helpful with any questions. Seriously - I question whether these positive reviews were from friends or family members. Addendum: after posting this review, I had a very helpful phone call from E&S. They apologize

Ellsworth Gilman & Stout have been helping my business succeed by providing me valuable tax assistance. They are quick to respond to my needs and provide me with all the information I need to operate the finances of my business. I recommend them highly.

Deb is the best!!! She is so patient and kind and really goes to work for you. I?ve had several CPAs in the past and no one?s client service comes close to hers. Hiring them is the best decision I?ve made in a long time.

As a self manage HOA. Ellsworth and Stout have provided the best service in Taxes and Audits. I highly recommend them

We have been using Ellsworth, Gilman & Stout for years, and we love it! They are extremely thorough and responsive, which makes them a wonderful firm to work with!

Dain is top of the Line! We could not have asked for a better team! It didn't take long for my father and I to realize that for Dain, it's more than just business; he cares about you as a person and he'll try his hardest to get you the best outcome possible. Thanks for going above and beyond Dain!

Ellsworth & Stout, CPAs manage the accounts for my legal practice, as well as for my husband's medical practice, and we would not have it any other way! Thank you for your expertise and for making our lives easier!

Ellsworth & Stout has been highly professional, provided timely communication, and expedient service. I would highly recommend their services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
