I love working with Syd. He is very professional he is always on top of all tax law and knows your right and deduction he always do a good job on my taxes

Four years ago I had a challenging tax situation that I knew I could not do the math or fill out the forms correctly to complete. I received a recommendation for Sydney and gave him a call to explain my needs. He understood, took on the 4 year project and completed it perfectly. A great professional find for me and highly recommended for your CPA needs.

We've been working with Syd for several years for tax planning purposes. Have always been impressed with his professionalism, expertise, and congeniality. Syd has been very proactive with us over the past few years of tax law fluctuations (tax code changes, stimulus payments, etc.), even taking the time to meet with us mid-year to adjust our tax planning if needed. His recommendations have also led us to our trust attorney and our financial advisor, so his professional network is one more value add shoul

I found Mr. Highley about 2 years after my trusted CPA of almost 50 years, retired. He?s been as knowledgeable and professional, his office staff also very helpful and professional, always answering any questions promptly and usually available by phone. When unavailable or busy with other clients, they are quick to return calls. They?ve been wonderful to do business with, I would highly recommend Sydney Highley, and his office, to family and friends.

We've been working with Syd Highley CPA on our annual tax filings for several years and have been delighted with his personalized attention and financial advice. With the recent changes in tax law Syd was proactive in meeting with us mid-year to plan for potential impacts we may not have anticipated. It was great to know he was looking around the curve on our behalf. The staff on Syd's team are responsive, professional, and warm. We recommend Syd Highley without reservation!

We have been with Syd for over 30 years. He has always been professional and courteous. He has always completed our taxes early. He's like an old friend.

I have been with this firm since 2021. I have been very pleased with the work that they have done for me. If they have questions, they ask right away and then move forward with my filings. If I have questions, the get right back to me. I had no idea how to handle my taxes after my husband died and I was left with different accounts To deal with. This form took that worry right out of my hands! I will co to use to go to this firm for my tax needs

We've been working with Syd for 9 tax seasons, now, and he's helped us so much. We also schedule mid-year assessments with him and they've proven to be most effective in planning. He's responsive, always, his office staff have been incredibly helpful and friendly. He always looks for ways to help us in the big picture, not just one tax year at a time. We would "HIGHLEY" recommend him!

Syd and his team are excellent and their advice is always timely, thorough, detailed and accurate. We appreciate their professionalism and dedication to assisting us with our taxes.

On May 24, 2024, I contacted Highley Sydney H CPA to inquire about their services for my business taxes. During the call, the accountant was extremely rude and dismissive. They refused to assist with my business taxes without providing a clear reason. This unprofessional behavior caused significant stress and delayed my tax preparation process. As a business owner, I expect a certain level of professionalism and courtesy, which was severely lacking in this interaction. I would not recommend Highley Sydney H

Syd Highley does an amazing job of preparing taxes and giving information to assist his clients in planning for future tax years. He and his staff are very responsive and efficient. With all the changes in 2018 the need for an expert couldn't be greater. Syd has taken several training courses already to prepare himself and his staff to meet the challenges ahead.

I wasn't necessarily in the market for a CPA, as I have prepared our taxes in the past. Syd was on time, very professional in the most warm and welcoming 'down-to-earth' kind of way, super easy to talk to and work with. I left with such a good feeling

We are new business owners in Elk Grove and scheduled a 10am appointment with Sidney Highley for a business tax consultation. We arrived just prior to our appointment time and were advised by his assistant that he was running a bit late. We could here him in his office having a casual conversation with a client that went on for over 30 min. Now 1/2 an hour after our appointment time, he emerged from his office and proceeded to take a different client into his office. We advised the assistant that we had an

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
