Customer Reviews

I am a fairly new small-business owner, and HLM was referred to me by a fellow entrepreneur. Mercedes and her team have been instrumental from the very start in helping me forge this new path and navigate each twist and turn along the way. Her advice has been tailored to my specific needs and is always based on informed and current financial statistics. My business has thrived as a result, and I would heartily recommend HLM as a sound financial partner in mapping out and building a successful long-term busi

My wife and I have been using HLM for years. Taxes are such a pain and can be so complex. It's good to know you have trusted professionals that keep your financial house in order. Mercedes and her team are awesome at doing that and wonderful to work with. We highly recommend.

This is my second year with HLM and the customer care dropped drastically. My business returns were overlooked and HLM did not file an extension. I was charged $2640 in penalties from IRS because of their mistake. I had requested through email, phone and messages and assured all was good until it was not. If you are not a self advocator when it comes to filing taxes, or someone knowledgeable about different deadlines and what needs to be filed, I would not suggest HLM. In hindsight, they say they cannot fil

Working with HLM has been a godsend for the past 10 years! Professional and friendly, responsive and highly skilled, Mercedes and her wonderful staff have taken care of us and our complicated returns. We self-filed for years but with me becoming a small business owner, new marriage laws that unfolded at different times, and other events, having HLM by our side has decreased gray hairs and sleepless nights. Thank you!

HLM has provided excellent service for me and my family for well over 20 years. The knowledge the team has paired with their exceptional service makes for the perfect relationship. I have lived in multiple states and never one time was there a hiccup in my financial health related to HLM; I highly recommend Mercedes & Team.

Mercedes, Deloyd and the entire HLM staff have been great to deal with. I had trouble reaching a human at the last firm I hired. Deloyd and Mercedes are always available for a quick call or email if I need information or assistance. They take time annually to meet and review our circumstances and tax variables and offer advice for the following year. I have recommended them to friends and family and will continue to do so!

We have been clients of HLM for a long time, and have always received courteous, professional service, and high quality advice and support. The HLM crew is accessible, easy to work with, and cares about the outcome of our organization. I recommend them highly!

I have been a client of HLM for about 12 years. I love this group. As a very small business owner they have helped me so much through the years. Any question, any disaster, they are THERE. I will never leave! I rarely post reviews, but especially during this awful Covid-19 crisis, I think it's important to point out the people who help and care. Thank you HLM.

My small business has been a client for almost a decade and I couldn't begin to count how many headaches they have saved me. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and always responsive. These people truly have a grasp on what it takes to run a business and make it profitable. Thank you HLM Juston Poole Owner/Operator Six Star Subaru Service Center

As a small business owner, it was difficult for me to finally take the leap and hire a CPA firm. It's been almost a year since our company hired HLM Financial, and I now know for certain that doing so was one of the best corporate decisions made thus far! Thanks Deloyd and Cody for keeping me sane! You both are AWESOME!!

As a business owner, it is refreshing to find someone who understands the complexities of our business operations. Deloyd takes time to provide monthly updates on our financial health as well as periodic meetings to review ways to maximize profit. They are truly a trusted advisor.

HLM has been my accountant for personal and business taxes for almost 20 years! They are amazing and I would not work with anyone else.

I have worked with HLM for many years with 2 different businesses and also for personal. The team is great and very knowledgeable. I would recommend them highly.

They are the best and the most caring about their clients. I have never had a bad experience with them. You couldn't ask for a better group to depend on. Thanks for being the best at what y'all do, and for being there.

Cody is the best! He is prompt, efficient, and reliable. The whole team is great!

Great tax guidance and exceptional customer service!

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
