Customer Reviews

I had a truly dreadful experience with this accountant. It's hard to know where to begin, but let me try to encapsulate the sheer incompetence and laziness I encountered. Firstly, this accountant displayed a stunning lack of initiative. Rather than going above and beyond to ensure my tax return was accurate and optimized, he did the bare minimum. He seemed utterly clueless about some basic deductions, including those related to IVF infertility treatments. I had to argue tooth and nail just to get him to ac

We met with Mr. Hoff to prepare tax returns for two (2) calendar years. When we arrived to pick-up both returns we were advised that only one (1) return was prepared. When questioning front desk personnel about the other return, she insisted that we did not provide paperwork the missing tax year. She brooked no discussion that they're office could have possibly misplaced our paperwork. We left the office without either return since we didn't trust the competence of the staff. Mr. Hoff's office called u

This guy is careless and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Unfortunately for us, our previous tax man retired. Hoff did our taxes this year. First problem was when he was going to deny our QCD deductions. When we pointed out they were both 501 (c) 3 charitable organizations, his comment was, "I guess I should have read further". Today we got an email from him stating that the returns had been filed and the Fed refund would be direct deposited in our checking account. The next paragraph stated the

John has been doing my taxes for over 30 years. He is friendly, fair, and accurate! I have always received the best service and have never encountered any problem whatsoever. I highly recommend him. I wouldn't go anywhere else for my tax preparation needs!

I found them on the Internet and scheduled a meeting to review my company / personal tax returns from the prior years and talk to them about my current company tax situation. I scheduled through email and quickly got a response back. (I had emailed a couple places and this is the only one that actually returned my email). I scheduled a time to meet with them. When I arrived, I met with John Hoff and we discussed my current situation and what he needed to take over my taxes and help me with other financ

7-11-2022 is my first appointment with Mr Hoff. He is polite and very professional. He was knowledgeable regarding advice on some serious tax questions. I felt comfortable with instructions concerning the direction for future decisions. Actually he saved us a lot of future grief. Thanks Mr Hoff.

John is thorough and knowledgeable. I've used his service for two years now and it started with a referral from a friend. I am very satisfied and can confidently recommend Mr. Hoff as a capable professional.

John Hoff and his family owned and operated business has been taking care of our CPA needs going on 20 years. He is great to work with. He keeps up with new and existing tax laws insuring a very thorough understanding to financially benefit familiy and business needs. I had recently relocated out of state. John is still my CPA and had no problems with dealiing with a multi-state filings. Definately recommend.

John has been my accountant for several years and the extended Feise family for decades. He and his team are reliable, friendly and thorough in accomplishing the job on time and economically. The Hoff team answers tax questions in a timely manner during and outside of tax season. I highly commend John and his staff to all who need professional CPA assistance. Mark and Joan Feise

John misunderstood a pretty simple email detailing international income that cost us an extra $4,000 in tax liability. When I caught his mistake in March 2020 I emailed him, and followed up with a phone call shortly after when I didn't hear back from him. He actually pretended to not be in the office to avoid talking to me when it was clear from how his assistant spoke that he was there. Later that day he emailed back and said he'd misinterpreted the information but we'd file an amended return. With the IRS

John and his team have done my personal and business taxes for many years. They offer quality work and great customer service. I highly recommend!

Very knowledgeable and easy to do business with. Been using their services for quite a few years and had zero issues. John and his crew are all very nice to work with!

For us this was a bait and switch outfit. It was a poor experience. Gave our 1099's to an assistant who missed 3 of the 1099's completely which means we would have under reported our income which would have led to who knows what. Promised one pricing and in the end in was 40% higher. A kind of dismissive outfit. You are just a number.

We have used John Hoff's services for many years. We are extremely happy with the results. We highly recommend him.

John does my taxes every year for many, many years and always does a very thorough and wonderful job. I would highly recommend him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
