Customer Reviews

I found Mr. Shelby through a Google search and was very happy with his firm throughout the process. Sharon was very accessible for questions and Mr. Shelby himself was very helpful on our initial teleconference. He made filing very straightforward and I greatly appreciated the simplicity of working with him.

Mr. Shelby and his associates are a highly professional team were quick to respond and were extremely helpful throughout all phases of my tax return. Mr. Shelby took the time to personally speak with me about any potential concerns. The portal they utilize is user friendly and made a great vehicle for answering any questions during the preparation. I had the required tax documents submitted very early in February and they were completed and filed within one week. I absolutely recommend using their services.

Mr. Shelby has been doing our taxes for quite a number of years. We certainly prefer using a professional CPA with the expertise and knowledge that we have experienced here. Any problems we have had, even later in the year after tax time, have been handled efficiently. The office staff is also very pleasant on the phone and in person. It gives great peace of mind to know our taxes are done correctly. We will definitely keep coming back to Mr. Shelby!

My taxes got a bit more complicated a couple years ago, and I decided to stop doing taxes on my own and find a firm to help me. I interviewed a couple private offices as well as the local H&R block, and Mr. Shelby was by far the most professional and he is just generally a kind man! I'm glad I decided to choose his firm to help me. His office has prepared my taxes for the last two years, and I'd recommend them without reservation to anyone.

I was highly impressed with the amount of knowledge and patience that Mr. Shelby has. I was a first time client looking and needing immediate assistance and his ability to take care of my Tax Returns in a 2 day turn around - before the Oct 15th deadline was amazing. Also, I would like to give Kudos to the bookkeeper Ms. David who on several occasions was very warm, inviting and very committed in making sure that all my needs were satisfied. Im looking forward to working and doing more business with Mr. Shel

I give 5 stars to Mr. Shelby! We sold our house in Baltimore in Jan 2018. Because we were out-of-state residents, the state of MD withheld 7.5% on the entire purchase price (yes, unbelievably, as if the cost basis of the house = $0). I filed a MD non-resident return in March 2019 to get my refund ($12,000.00). However, they never processed our return, even though I have a certified receipt that they received it. Being non-resident, we were about to give up and let MD treasury rip us off for $12K, when I i

I came to Mr. Shelby with six years of back taxes. Assuming the worst, I was quite surprised when he told me everything would be just fine. He was able to work some magic and squared me away with minimal damage. Also, I noticed the office was way more comfortable than any H&R Block I've ever set foot in. It's a great place and fantastic staff. I WILL SURELY RETURN NEXT YEAR!! I highly recommend Michael K. Shelby.

Updated message: Nothing I said is disparaging of this person, I don't know her and have nothing ill to say about her personally. I'm merely relaying to you what it was like to be on the receiving end of her "intake" and what I said was 100% accurate. If you're willing to take me on at a discounted rate for this unfortunate experience, feel free to reach out. Otherwise, I'll be taking my business elsewhere and encouraging other to do the same. *********** Message to the firm owners: get someone else to do

This was our first year working with Mr. Shelby. The process was seamless! Mr. Shelby's staff was very professional and courteous. Our taxes were done before April 15. We will definitely continue to use Mr. Shelby to do our taxes.!!!

I have been with Michael Shelby for over 10 years which may indicate that I value his expertise. I have experienced a number of changes in my life during that period which affected his response and so has he to a degree. Throughout I have had the pleasure to talk with several different accountants and all of these visits have been very pleasant but most of all, successful. I value his expertise and will continue to be one of his loyal customers. Thank you Michael

As new business owner I always have questions about what I can claim and not claim. Michael Shelby always gives me great advice that is direct and makes sense. He is patient with your questions and very knowledgeable of tax laws. If you are looking for a CPA to put you on the right track - Michael Shelby is the team to call first!

Finding a new CPA after 19 years caused me some anxiety. Mr. Shelby and his staff have been professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. Always responding to calls and emails in a timely manner in addition to listening thoughtfully to my issues and concerns then subsequently offering sage comments for my consideration. They have been a pleasure to work with on taxes this year. and I look forward to building a long-term relationship with them.

This was my first visit with Michael Shelby and it won't be my last. I was impressed with how knowledgeable he was and even double checked himself by searching for the latest , most current information prior to submitting anything. He made the process very easy and painless. He is super organized and most importantly, there were no hidden fees. I would recommend his services to anyone.

I heard about Michael Shelby through Link Annapolis and I was not disappointment. Mr. Shelby's process is easy, efficient and you feel like you are part of the family. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a hard working CPA!

Michael Shelby is the coolest CPA that I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. His staff is very professional and fun. He also lives in Anne Arundel County and I'm all about supporting the home team. Rock on Michael Shelby!!!!

I give five stars, hands down! Everyone in the office is friendly, overly helpful, and patient. Truly, everyone! Mr. Shelby really cares about his clients and goes the extra step to be sure you understand everything and are getting what you deserve.

I first went to Michael Shelby to resolve an issue with some stock sales which two other accountants were unable to sort out; he saved me several thousand dollars. Since then he has been great to work with and very helpful. I recommend him to anyone I know who has difficult tax issues.

We have been using Mr. Shelby for many years now and extremely pleased with his service. He offers great advise, is very personable and we feel the best there is! His office staff is also very helpful and polite!

Mr. Shelby and his team are by far the best I have come across. This was our first year using them and it will not be our last. He was knowledgeable not only for the state of Maryland tax laws but other states where I also pay income taxes.

I was referred to the Shelby firm a few years ago and I wish I had known them sooner. Mr. Shelby and Ms. David have always been available and willing to help with my employment tax issues. I highly recommend their services.

Fantastic service. Whether you are a business or another run of the mill taxpayer, Michael takes a personal interest in your situation and works hard to meet your requirements. You will get the best possible service and best results with M K Shellby and his team.

Love Michael's patience and willingness to help. I have called to ask for guidance many times as I made decisions about navigating my early retirement needs. He was amazing and a great counselor! The whole staff supported me many times in the last years under his service!

Mr Shelby is very secretive about his charges, take care to ask at each step what the cost is. He charges for each email, phone call, conversation, etc. that for others would be considered part of the service. This is all tallied up at the end, so the client is unaware of the charges and therefore has no choice in the matter. When confronted about the charges, he yelled at us, refused to file our taxes, and stormed out of the room. Then he proceeded to demand full payment and threatened with collections.

Mike provided us a very good consultation with a tricky international tax issue we were having. He took the time to look over our paperwork and make a recommendation, even referring us to another provider when he realized we needed a different service than what he could offer. Very professional!

Michael Shelby and his staff are outstanding, providing the highest level of service in a warm friendly environment. They are there for you all year long to answer any and all tax questions.

Michael has done our families taxes for several years. He is thorough, careful and makes himself available for questions as they come up.

Excellent work on a complicated tax return in a very short time frame. Thanks so much for the quick turn around and the attention to detail!

Prompt, professional and great attention to detail. Would highly recommend for personal income tax prep and filing.

Michael and all staff were very personable, I felt cared for, they were all timely and prepared. Will continue coming back!

Wow! These guys know their stuff and are not afraid of being direct when it's in your best interest. I am glad we found them!

Michael and Stuart are the best in town. They really care about doing things well, and doing things right.

A professional and personable buisiness who provided me with prompt, informative, and professional advice and services. Thank you Sharon and Mike for your help!!

Great Service If you come into the office with worry on your face you always leave with a smile and problem solved

This was unparalleled experience. Quick and quality work. Great communication and collaboration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
