It's taken me some time to post a review, but if it helps save even one person a massive headache and potential loss of money due to the errors SKCPA makes and refuses to take accountability for, it's worth it. SKCPA has made multiple mistakes over the years with our personal, business and family business taxes - but this one is the final straw; the oversight cost me $18K. Although the CPA (a supposed tax advisor and expert) admitted multiple times his mistakes and indirectly blamed my bookkeeper, even too

We've been using SK for at least 20 years (I've lost track). They are always responsive, helpful, and efficient. This year they found us an extra $1000 credit we didn't know we were eligible for, so we've more than made back their very reasonable fee. Highly recommend.

It was a fun morning! I didn?t have any paper to shred, but the beer and buffet of BBQ and hot dogs was great (and the Mac & cheese & pretzels?!). Loved the venue, with a vintage pinball machine room (all functioning!) and cool tables made of huge slices of wood. Very generous of the company to sponsor this!

Transferred accountants to SK CPAs and very happy I did. Seth my CPA is professional, responsive and always provides great advice. Highly recommended!

We?ve been using SKCPAs for about a year now with our clients, and the results are exceptional! The team knows what they are doing, they are quick to respond, and just all around nice to be around. We have absolutely loved everything they have done for us and our clients. Definitely the best CPAs around!

We had switched this year from a CPA we had been using for a few years to Stitely & Karstetter for both our business and personal needs and we couldn't have made a better decision. Frank is our lead contact and the process for working with him and reviewing our taxes could not be easier. Everything is done through an online portal and Frank doesn't leave out any details. Not only have we saved money but we feel like Stitely & Karstetter really cares about us. If you're unhappy with your current tax per

I?ve always prided myself in using Turbo Tax to do my taxes for my business and personal tax returns. As my small business has grown, I thought I should consult a CPA. Michael Westwick was recommended by a friend, so I had a conversation with him late last year about my taxes. He recommended I switch my business to an LLC and make a late election to file as an S-Corp for 2018. We did and we were accepted in early 2019 after the IRS re-opened from the shutdown. This move saved me about $15,000+ in self emplo

Nothing but great things to say about Michael T. Westwick, CPA. My wife and I both run our own business, have w-2 jobs, plus my out of state income. Michael is always responsive during the year about my tax questions and goes over every detail come tax time to assure us the best return. I was sure we?d owe for 2019 and instead we are getting a satisfactory refund from state and fed. Highly recommended.

I am with the reviewer Pam Robinson on the review of Stitely and Karstetter. I have also been with Frank for more years than I can remember and he is always kind, courteous and responsive, as is his staff. Even when an occasional error pops up it is handled promptly and explained fully. I trust and rely on him for proper tax guidance and would highly recommend S&K and have. Thank You. Carol Sims

I very much enjoyed working with my new accountant, Michael Westwick. Before we even talked about taxes, he took the time to get to know me and my financial situation, which I appreciated very much. He also asked me a lot about future considerations tax wise. During the process he was consistent about following up and responding to my questions, with both candor and good humor. I really enjoyed working with Michael and I will continue to in the future.

Our CPA here, Frank, has done my personal and company taxes the past 2 years. They have NOT been easy financials, but Frank handled them with ease. There have been no issues whatsoever and he's saved us from paying loads of unnecessary taxes. His knowledge is fantastic and is still helping us with various highly specific needs throughout 2017.

I've worked with Max S. and Nathan G. for a couple of years now (total accounting care) and as a small business owner in Northern VA I have a million things to worry about every day; however, my taxes and books are not one of them. These guys are a huge breath of fresh air, they are extremely responsive and show that they truly care about my company and the best interest of it. I have had a couple of terrible experiences with accountants in the past which scared me off for a while. So glad I found S&K and

Frank Stitely has been doing my business and personal tax returns for several years now. We are a small business, and do not need much sophisticated help. But he has been timely and efficient in filing my returns. And he is always available for quick questions before the chargeable hours start. I highly recommend this firm.

Amazing! This company and my CPA Michael Westwick are complete professionals. I previously used another local CPA and was so unhappy with their services. I was recommended to Stitley & Karsetter by a coworker and have been so impressed. Michael and his team helped my business from over paying in taxes. Not only that, he walked me through the process and the tax world like the expert he is. Knowledgeable & reliable, definitely recommend!

I had an exceptional impromptu experience with Michael Westwick, CPA. When I walked into S&K in Chantilly, I needed an immediate solution to an outstanding tax concern and was unsure about how to begin. I had tried to handle the matter myself and spent hours on the phone with Turbo Tax professionals over a period of weeks and could not get answers.about how to correct a misfiling that had proceeded through Intuit's services. I needed a fast, air-tight remedy. I needed the resolution to be reflected back

Our company has been utilizing S&K services for over a decade now. Since the change over from another firm, Frank made himself available whenever we had any questions or issues. What I like about him is that unlike other companies, you can always count on him to reply back to you at the time he has committed to. In this day and age, this is a hard to come by and we do appreciate it. The other reason we have stayed and grown with S&K, is that Frank is always looking in way to increase the value of the relati

When we moved to Virginia last year, we were recommended to contact Michelle Hecker of Stitely and Karstetter. This was the best advice given to us. We met initially to discuss our finances and a tax planning meeting for our income tax returns. Ms Hecker has walked us through and filed all our tax papers and returns. Then a big bonus to us was their Shredding event held last week. We could safely shred our papers and old financial papers right at the Stitely and Karstetter facility. Plus they offe

Frank prepared the 706 Estate Tax return for my husband after his recent death. There was some delay in the preparation because, as I understood it, the necessary software for the year was not yet available. This did require filing for an extension. Once the software became available the return was prepared in a timely fashion and the necessary letter from the IRS was received to support portability if that becomes necessary in the future. There was some inconsistency and lack of attention to detail in

I reached out to a real estate colleague for a recommendation on a good accountant to help get my business life together. She recommended Michael Westwick with Stitely & Karstetter and boy was it one of the best decisions I have made for my business! Michael is thoughtful with answers and has a real teaching perspective when explaining options. He is super quick to respond and the tool/system/dashboard/portal they use is so user-friendly. All of his advice and expertise has paid off and I am seeing the be

I have been dealing with Frank Stitely for at least 17 years ! I would have no other, he is the best !! He speaks not in CPA language, but in language you would understand ! His website is so awesome it makes it so easy to get docs to him at tax time. And he always replies to any questions very quickly. Well worth whatever his fees !

I say this with a heavy heart because there are some good people who I like who work there, but I give them one star because I can not give them zero. Extremely unprofessional, does not follow up, to the point of costing me thousands of dollars in taxes. I would not recommend S&K to do anything tax related, and especially not if it requires anything more than just pressing send and walking away.

I've been with S&K for over 20 years and always receive outstanding results and personal service. Paul Karstetter provides crucial advice for my business and personal finances. The firm has remained on the cutting edge of technology yet remains focused on building relationships with their clients.

I was initially impressed with Frank's meeting and pre tax advice. What I found out later was the advice was flawed, in my opinion. I found no value in what I paid in comparison to the expertise and service I received. For the amount they charged for both personal and corporate tax returns I would have expected better analysis and experience. I would not recommend them to anyone. No paper copies of returns given and the vouchers did not add up to the amount due in tax, off by a dollar but attention to

Paul Karstetter, CPA has been our accountant for tax preparation for the past several years--his advice and service couldn't be better. With his advice we've made better decisions and saved money. He couldn't be more responsive when we've needed him. I highly recommend Paul.

We?ve been with Stitely & Karstetter 15+ years for both personal & business tax services and have been extremely satisfied. Paul, Michelle, and everyone we?ve worked with has provided us outstanding service. They feel like family to us!

My CPA Michael Westwick has been a tremendous help to me since becoming my accountant. Financial planning, taxes, you name it - Mike is the guy you want on your team. I'm glad he is on mine. Thoughtful and superb service all around.

Below is an email from the company and I was unsure if it was spam, which shows just how unprofessional the email is. John "The Duke" Wayne here. The fine folk at S&K have added a note to your client account in the Client Center. Please check your Dashboard at skcpas.com. "Friend, there's nobody up there shooting back at you. It isn't always being fast or accurate that counts. It's being willing." Thanks! The S&K Team

I needed some information about filing taxes for an LLC. I had questions and concerns. My call was answered so professionally, politely, and respectfully. Mike then proceeded to answer all my questions clearly in a language I can understand. I could not ask for anything more. When I am ready to go in business, I know the business CPA company I will be reaching out to.

Michelle Hecker is our competent and always reliable go-to CPA. All our visits, both in person and online are fulfilling. Michelle is knowledgeable; she conveys information clearly, and she is a pure delight to work with. We are consistently relieved when we go over numbers with her and know she will follow through by taking the best care of us. Stitely and Karstetter continually keeps us abreast of all industry changes. We cannot imagine working with any other Accounting Firm or CPA. Pam Totta

Michael Westwick of Stitely & Karstetter is friendly, honest, and sincere professional. If you're looking for someone who will listen to your needs, deliver the solution right for you, and give a great service experience from start to finish, call Michael. Highly recommend!

Very professional. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are understanding and easy to work with. After many years I now find "tax season" no longer intimidating.

2019 was my first year working with a CPA ever for complex taxes and this firm ended the guessing game and laid out for me how things are done page by page and with multiple worksheets. Michael is a wiz at numbers so I highly recommend him to anyone new to trying to figure the IRS out.

I did my taxes with Michael Westwick in 2018 and was blown away by the service and how easy it was! I love the online portal and really glad I did it. I used H and R Block for the past 4 years and felt like this was much better.

Unbelievably valuable! Our small company had suffered from several years of misguided tax advise and some rather convoluted issues that have needed "unraveling" and explanations. Frank has helped us get on the right track and stay there. We could not be more satisfied or ask more from any professional.

For years they have kept my stress in check by perfectly handling my personal and corporate taxes. I would be lost without Paul. Two years ago I came through a 3 year IRS audit with NO CHANGES - thanks to S&K.

Great advice on a tricky and unexpected tax issue. Michelle was knowledgeable, amazing and saved us some serious money.

I have used Frank for my taxes for many years and have always been extremely happy with the accuracy and promptness of the work that has been performed. I highly recommend Stitely & Karstetter!

So glad I found them. I wish I started using them sooner. Very professional, knowledgeable, informative. Worth every penny. I work with Michael and he is fabulous. Highly recommend!

Loved working with these CPAs. I had quite a few questions about self-employment that were answered quickly and professionally. Michael was especially helpful and I hope to work with him again in the future.

I worked with Michelle at this location. She is amazing!! She worked on personal and corporate taxes for me. I can't thank her enough!! She's awesome!! I highly recommend this office for both personal and corporate taxes.

Great experience using S&K. I highly recommend Michael Westwick. He took the time to get to know me and my needs. I know that I have a CPA for life now.

Paul has handled my business and personal taxes for over ten years. He is a consummate professional and my trusted advisor on tax and finance matters.

They've been doing my taxes for a decade. Frank is excellent. He helps me all year, and not just during tax season!

We receive professional, prompt and friendly service and advice! And fun emails!! we are a small business and highly recommend Frank and his team.

Was initially told my business taxes take 2 weeks. 5 weeks later I was told my small business taxes were put on hold because bigger businesses had priority due to their deadline. Accountant rarely returned my phone calls. Disappointing.

The group at S&K CPAs have provided exemplary service for my personal & corporate needs for nearly 30 years. I recommend them highly.

Had a wonderful experience at this firm! Michael Westwick was great to work with and I look forward to working with him throughout the years.

Stitely & Karstetter has been doing my taxes since 1998. I've consistently had excellent service and highly recommend them.

Frankt Stitely is a true professional in the accounting/tax arena. He knows how the rules work and he's great at explaining everything.

I had a tax question related to the sale of a small business. Michael Westwick was helpful with a quick and thorough answer. I'd recommend him!

Horrible experience. Multiple mistakes, poor communication. Expensive (I suspect they charged me the time it took them to correct the errors I identified.) Would never use them again.

Unprofessional communications and waited until the last second to file our taxes. Much better companies out there for the price.

Great place. Good drink. Good food. Good vibe

Not a fan of their service. Misleading information, and roughly $200 over the average cost to file taxes. I used tax slayer the last three years and it was $40. I just don't see the advantage of using them.

I had the pleasure to meet with Michael Westwick, CPA. He is knowledgeable and a great listener!

I have been a client for 12 years. Their online client portal and the quality of their accounting services are outstanding.

Christie is great! Glad to have been a client for many years!

Done our taxes for @ 20 yrs. Excellent work. Responsive. Friendly people

Always professional, prompted and knowledgeable.

Great service with a quick deadline!

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
