Customer Reviews

We recently began working with Shawn and his team, and the experience has been excellent. They are highly professional, responsive, and a pleasure to collaborate with. I would gladly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable and quality service.

Zero stars. My ex hired them to do taxes during our last year of marriage. I agreed based on a promise that he would pay for joint return. Days before the tax deadline, I was given a bill for hundreds of dollars for a separate return I never agreed to and didn?t need. It was a simple return that I could have done for free on TurboTax. I paid SBA because they did the work. Now they email constantly and won?t leave me alone despite numerous requests to stop. I hate to give negative reviews, but I told them i

Really grateful to this whole team for all of their care and kindness in helping us with our taxes--and beyond. We enjoyed Gary taking the time to meet with us in person this year to answer our myriad of questions. Don't usually think to write reviews of tax accountants, but these guys are truly "the good guys"

Gary and his team at Small Business Advisors has been helping me and my business for 14 years. From writing our initial articles of incorporation to full service tax preparation, we feel we have a strong partner in SBA. Gary makes you feel like you are his only client and gives everyone his personal attention. He gets my strongest recommendation no matter if you are an individual who wants to smart with your tax return, or a small business owner, SBA is worthy of consideration!

SBA and Gary have handled our corporate (2 s-corps) and personal taxes since he started in 2001-2002 (I don't remember exactly). He is ethical and provides knowledgeable guidance and input on the ever changing tax laws. He has been invaluable giving us sound retirement advice and connecting us with experts who can further help us. He is *always* courteous and kind and never rushes us, even when it is busy tax season and we have a million questions. Gary has helped us position our companies and ourselves fo

SBA and Gary have been handling our taxes for a few year. Gary and his team are professional and knowledgeable. Gary is always willing to take the time to answer my questions. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a tax advisor to reach out to Gary and his team at SBA.

I have been using SBA for years (15+). I have full trust in Gary and his team in getting my taxes done in a timely matter and everything is done correctly. No one wants to be audited but it's reassuring knowing that if you are there is nothing to worry about. My adult children now use him as well. His client portal option makes it so easy to submit documents. Highly recommend.

In the early days (of Gary's ownership), this place was simply amazing but we didn't get much attention as time went on (perhaps, cuz of business setbacks on our end?). As a small business entity, my dad relied on Gary (and his predecessor) for taxes (business, personal) for a good while but we saw a decline in responsiveness as time went on (one can afford to give some leeway & perhaps we were not as patient as one ought to be). In the end, our business faced some tough issues and once our revenues decline

SBA has handled our personal and Corporate Business IRS taxes since 2012, when we opened our doors.Very professional staff and Gary is a wealth of knowledge. He has helped manage us through the Pandemic and his advice and council allowed us to continue to grow the Business and hire more staff. I have total trust in his integrity and honesty.

Gary has been excellent at helping us with our taxes and with our small business company tax questions. He is incredibly knowledgeable and is generous with helping us better understand the ins and outs of our income, with holdings, etc. He talks to us like we?ve been friends for years. We?ll never stop using his services.

From our initial dealings with Gary Heldt and his staff, my wife and I have only had positive experiences. He has helped guide us through selling a business, and making sure that we are well set up from a tax prospective. With all of the moving parts of switching to a new accounting firm, Gary has proactively reached out to make sure that we were comfortable during the process and kept us informed with the next steps along the way. We are very pleased, and look forward to a continued successful busines

Very pleased with Small Business Advisors for over 15 years. Gary has helped me quite well in my complex taxes that included estate, personal and rental properties, (one co-owned) and the allowed deductions not to overlook.I have never been disappointed. He's thorough and knowledgeable!

Gary and his staff at Small Business Advisors have played an integral role with the continued success of my business since I purchased it a few years back. Gary always proactively reaches out, and has helped us secure The Paycheck Protection Program Loan. This is extremely important to me and the well being of my staff, so that we can continue to work remotely though these trying times.

Gary has prepared our taxes for years. His staff is professional and he provides quality service. He keeps his clients informed on tax code changes and gives a personal touch you don't find many places today. I would highly recommend him and his services.

Gary Heldt and the Staff at Small Business Advisers are great! He's done my taxes for the last 4 years. They are responsive to questions and help through out the year, not just during Tax season. I've recommended them to others who are also very pleased with their services.

Last year was my first experience with Gary and his team and I was extremely pleased with the service, professionalism and overall experience. They are always ready and willing to answer any questions, will get back to you with follow-up if they need to do more research. Will continue to utilize Gary and team for years to come.

Gary and his team from Small Business Advisors have done our personal taxes for years and counseled us on issues, as well. We continue to recommended SBA to acquaintances as they are knowledgeable and caring.

Noone is better than Gary and the folks at SBA! He's been doing my taxes for 20 years now, never an issue, always available to assist and completes them in record timing. His online portal is easy to use and makes what could be a nightmare an enjoyable experience. Refund arrives right to my bank account tomorrow, and I'm just trying to think about what small gift I'm going to buy myself to celebrate :-)

I have been working with Gary and his firm for almost 10 years now. As a small business owner (I run a music-instruction studio in my home), I find my dealings with Gary to be professional, intelligent, and he always makes me feel like I'm a worthwhile client. Great value, too!

My family's taxes are straightforward--single income, investments, kids--no property, no second homes, no divorces, etc., but with all the new convoluted tax laws I took a kind neighbor's recommendation and entrusted my taxes to SBA. They seemed more professional than the last CPA I used (whose office looked like a set for a "Hoarders" reality show). However, 3 weeks after I gave SBA all of my tax docs---and now just 3 calendar days from the filing deadline--SBA still cannot tell me when they will be done

Small Business Advisors (Gary Heldt) is UNPROFESSIONAL and just plain STINKS! I tried to schedule a 10 minute call to discuss my taxes, I tired phone and e-mail. I was told that Gary did not have any time in the next 10 weeks for a ten minute call. I also, email several times hoping that Gary could respond at his leisure when he had a minute. Small Business Advisors didn't have the courtesy to respond to any of my e-mails. Needless to say, I no longer use there services. Do yourself a favor and go som

My family and I have been clients of Small Business Advisors (SBA) for over 20 years. We have appreciated the excellent service they provide during tax season, and their availability to answer our questions throughout the year either in person, on the phone, or via email. We highly recommend Gary Heldt and his Associates at SBA for any financial services.

Gary and his team at Small Business Advisors has handled my taxes for 20 years. They have always been there when I needed them. Gary is now helping with college planning, and has saved me THOUSANDS of dollars through our college planning.

Absolutely sub par service!!! I am a first time customer who came to you because you were recommended. Yet, I almost feel insulted because we have not had any face to face meetings, nor have you given me the decency to pick up the phone to do business. On top of that you have not even responded to my emails. I had to call your office to find out the status of the 3 year tax return I hand delivered to your office a week ago. Then I was told by your receptionist that if I would like to pursue your services I

Not the greatest for individual tax preparation. They will readily accept your tax work, but obviously individual taxes take a back seat to business clientele and any other established clients. In the end, they finish my taxes accurately I believe, but not without much worry that they would meet the deadline.

Excellent tax knowledge. They are thorough and provide an outline of exactly what is needed to make the filing very simple. They take the time to listen and offer ideas how not to pay more than is required. They understand the new tax rules which is no easy feat. I strongly recommend them for your tax needs.

Completely disappointed. My wife and I used this company to file our taxes based on a family recommendation. I thought they would have a meeting with us to discuss our tax situation when we started but that never happened. We received a letter specifying the terms of our engagement at almost literally the 11th hour. They asked to upload everything online with little to no insight or direction and then waited until the last minute to review the documents and file our taxes. Everything was rushed last minute

Mr. Heldt and his staff have always been pleasant and accommodating. My taxes were done in a reasonable time frame and all my questions were answered in a manner that I could understand. I highly recommend them.

We've used Small Business Advisors for years, and find Gary Heldt and his staff excellent in every way -- great tax service and sound financial planning advice as well.

I have been a client of the small business advisors for many years and have been consistently pleased with the level of service provided and the quality of work done. I recommend them for taxes, accounting and other small business needs.

I have used SBA for personal tax returns for several years and always very pleased with the service and quick turnaround. Highly recommend.

We had a great experience from the moment we were greeted at the front desk! We had our taxes back within 10 days They were professional, friendly, and they know their stuff!! Highly Recommended!

We have been using Gary and SBA for over 25 years. We just recently retired to Delaware and we still use them. You won't find a better source for your personal and business needs.

Peace of mind is priceless. Gary and his SBA team are the best. I highly recommend them!

Gary and his team have done an excellent job for me over the past several years.

Been a client for years. They are the best! Knowledgeable, helpful and will always do their best for you!

Very nice information and important for me and my family

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
