Customer Reviews

Had a consultation appointment with Jim to discuss personal tax return and he was very informative and transparent, he earned my trust by the end of our meeting.

Jim and his staff continue to do excellent work year after year. Glad to have them working on my behalf for both business and personal taxes! Definitely brings peace of mind

These guys got me a bigger refund than expected. I didnt pay nearly what I paid those other chain tax places and they did all the paperwork for me. I would highly recommend these guys for any personal and business taxes. I've been going here for a few years and they've done a wonderful job and they are all awesome people. If you want to make sure your taxes are done correctly, this is where you want to go. They even helped me with my business sales taxes.

Jim does high quality work! He went above & beyond just doing my personal taxes by also helping consult me to resolve a tax issue from the year before which resulted in me saving almost $1k. I received email my taxes were done less than 30 hours later, very fast! It was a pleasure and he has my business as long as I live here.

Jim has been doing my taxes for years and he is amazing! He is kind, cordial, down to earth and an expert CPA for folks who are self employed! He knows his stuff and his services are prompt...I dropped off my paperwork on Sunday evening and I received and email less than 24 hours later that my taxes were complete. Wow...does it get better than that...??

This CPA tax office is great not only for returns but also for more complicated consulting work. I refer business clients to Jim and his staff regularly, also clients with tax/IRS issues, and have heard nothing but compliments. Jim works well with people online and also has a walk in office conveniently located on Gravois. Give them a try you'll be happy that you did :)

I found STL tax after dealing with another tax preparer that refused to return calls. Multiple calls. STL Tax is everything the other place was not. Jim & everyone I have come into contact with are friendly, courteous, professional, knowledgeable. The rates are reasonable, and they walk you through every step, providing as much guidance as you require. They promptly return emails and/or phone calls, which is much appreciated. This is my first year using STL Tax to prepare my taxes, and I will be back

Jim is great. I dropped off my W-2?s unannounced on a Friday around noon. He had them done that afternoon. He?s been doing my taxes for a couple years. And we will continue to do business together.

Jim reduces my stress a lot especially given all the numerous forms you have to deal with as a St. Louis and Missouri tax payer and business owner. He always does a good job explaining what forms go where and makes it easy to sign and send for quarterly payments and has made good suggestions for our business structure that have resulted in significant tax savings. Highly suggest, especially for biz owners

MrJim Coats Stltax staff are very professional, and knowledgeable. It is very easy to reach them and talk to them. There are no gimmicks or hidden fee. They do my personal and business taxes. You get an excellent service for sure.

READ, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE* Rest assured while they got the average Joe covered, they'll curse, threaten, and even take steps toward you in attempts to cause bodily harm if you have feel necessary to raise any issues. Was chased away from the door after coming to pick up my file because the old gentlemen with glasses I spoke too there and prior on the telephone minutes before had became flustered and cursed me out over my concerns relating to one of his female workers speaking to me in a condescending rude m

II haves used Jims services for many years, he is always quick to respond to any questions I may have and does a terrific job! One of the best CPA'S I have ever worked with! He is extremely knowledgable and has been a friend of the family for years, he is very trustworthy as well, don't waste your time with anyone else! Jim has your best interests at heart! Michael

Called asking for basic tax advise regarding a county tax and other tax related issues. The person answered the phone right away to their credit. As soon as they THOUGHT it wasn?t related to specifically income tax I was hung up on after a few general comments and was told they were busy. He wouldn?t give me 60 seconds to explain what was going on. Not very friendly or caring, and not a good listener. I can?t believe I was hung up on, so rude.

Truly a horrible business! Dropped all needed documents off in February to file taxes for year 2018 this was for four preparations two personal and two businesses . The personals were not filed till april 2019 and the business ones were filed late resulting in large penalties from the IRS. The owner james aka jim coats never ever returns calls or e-mails and I have all supporting documents to prove this. I have waited months to hear from him before writing this review and contacting the Bar association and

My company has been with STLTAX for several years now and I can tell you, after being with several other firms previously, that you won?t find a better accounting firm for small business and or personal use. Their quality of work is extraordinary. The work is done on time and the price is always fair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
