Customer Reviews

as you stated on the phone" how long is this going to take I have more important things to do." I signed paperwork for The Tax Shelter to get paid for their services from our Fed return. Not out of pocket. Then without any kind of notice you authorize a bank to take money out of my debit account. Before you try and cover it up, I know that the information for my debit account was only given for the deposit not a withdrawal transaction.

Ken Lill and Tom Parkman at the Tax Shelter have been preparing my parents taxes and my taxes for years. Ken has assisted me and my parents with CPA questions/needs. They are professional, extremely knowledgeable, trustworthy and personable. Highly recommend their services!

I have been doing my taxes with Tom since I arrived back in Athens. Until him, I had never been self filing properly, and consequently had never gotten a very good tax return. He is so thorough and friendly, I never feel like a number. I have had complex returns because of rental property and working in more than one state, and he is always so diligent. Simply the BEST!!

Ken is personable, efficient and you can trust him. He was very patient with me since I lacked one of the documents to complete the preparation. There are several ways to have the Tax Shelter submit your information which makes things really easy. Can't say enough positive things with the years of experience I have had with this organization.

Tom Parkman is our go-to tax guy! The Tax Shelter made it easy to schedule our appointment and had several availabilities even in April. Tom himself is very knowledgeable in taxes and helps us to get the best tax refund each year. We were able to pay for his services through our tax refund too and didn't have to pay out of pocket for anything! 10/10 recommend

I am more than glad that I decided to take our business to The Tax Shelter. Outstanding service. Tom guided me through every question I had and excelled in customer service. Really pleasant and efficient experience. I will continue to do our taxes there. I had a great time, too!

Always a pleasure to work with Ken Lill, CPA, on personal and business accounting matters. He is very knowledgeable, efficient & service oriented. Staff is friendly and helpful, a bonus when dealing with money matters. The online portal is a great addition, adding to already efficient processes. Ken has been in my corner for 25 + years; I never get tired of the great service at a great price!

Our tax preparer, Mr. Tom Parkman, does an impeccable job of serving his clients. He is personable, professional and thorough. He takes his time to evaluate and review the tax information. He provides recommendations for you to get the most out of your tax preparation experience. We highly recommend his service.

I was super stressed about filing 4 years, worth of taxes. Ken handled the paperwork, like a champ. He is very efficient. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Thanks bunches!

Zack has been so helpful with doing my taxes. He spends a lot of time with me and has been a great resource as far as giving helpful tips on how to help with my taxes. He is very knowledgeable and always answers my questions. I highly recommend him.

Tom has been my CPA for several years now and has always provided 1st rate service. Professional, knowledgable and First Class service all the way around. I highly recommend The Tax Shelter to anyone looking for an excellent CPA.

Zach does a fabulous job of meeting our financial needs. He helped us set up our new business and gave us helpful advice on which avenues would work best for us. He?s always efficient and answers any questions we may have!

Marc Mosley has been my tax guy for many years; he is knowledgeable and efficient. I?m usually in and out within 45 minutes. Being self employed can cause lots of stress when it?s tax time, but Marc makes it a lot easier, and painless.

Tom Parkman was assigned to me to fill out my income taxes 5 years ago. Ever since then I chose him to continue to do my income taxes. He is kind, sincere and makes you feel like you are at right at home. I look forward to seeing him each year. I have been using The Tax Shelter for over 30 years. Thank you for your service.

My family has used The Tax Shelter for decades starting with my in-laws and now our son. It is always easy, fast, & such a relief to have someone so capable handling what can be a stressful & frustrating ordeal when done independently. They keep up with the ever-changing laws so we don't have to & apply tax credits we may miss. Worth every penny! Ken Lill is just the best and an all around nice guy, too.

Absolutely horrible company. They don't even know there own contracts and what is in them. Lord help you if the IRS gets involved then they back down and run and hide. I would not use them for a tax return if they are the last company on earth.

My family and I have been going to see Ken and Marc for over 20 years. Best service in town. You won't find a more friendly fast and professional service out there. Thanks Marc and Tax shelter for all your service!!! 5 ?? service- Ellis family

Every year, The Tax Shelter in Athens, GA helps me survive tax season. Thanks to Ken Lill and his staff - everything is computed quickly and correctly.

Chad is the best! Very knowledgeable about all the tax laws. Always a quick & easy meeting and I know I can count on his calculations and advice. A few years ago Chad helped me to drop an IRS demand for $12,000 down to $1,100 - what a relief!

My experiences over the past 15 years have been excellent. I am self-employed and during slow times, Chad and company have always been kind to me and my small roster of clients. First rate knowledge and advisement!

Wonderful staff and very professional. Our family has been trusting this firm for years . Thank you Chad, always enjoy tye yearly tax visit.

Unfortunately, I have to write this two-star review. Trying to get a simple copy of something is very difficult from this office. Kenzi in particular is unhelpful and dismissive.

This place is TERRIBLE!! DO NOT do business with them. They implement the wrong information into the IRS causing you not to receive your refunds. And if you do receive it best believe it is NOT in a timely manor!! PLEASE LISTEN don?t give your information to these terrible people and waste your time!

Gail was extremely helpful, kind and caring about my current situation. I would definitely recommend her to anyone!

After 26 years in Athens, this is the most helpful place I've been. This is where to go for taxes and financial advice !

We have used The Tax Shelter for many years! They are fast and efficient and we highly recommend them.

I scheduled an appointment on their website, drove 45 minutes for the appointment and they were closed. Why let people schedule and appointment at a time you're not open?

Chad is great! Very attentive to your finances and super friendly. A+++!

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications should I look for in a CPA?

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.

How do I find a CPA in my area?

Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.

What’s the difference between a CPA and an accountant?

A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.

How do I know if a CPA specializes in my needs?

Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.

Should I check a CPA’s reviews before hiring?

Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.

How can I verify a CPA’s license?

Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.

What questions should I ask during a CPA consultation?

Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.

How much should I expect to pay for a CPA’s services?

Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.

Can I work with a CPA remotely?

Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.

How do I assess a CPA’s communication skills?

During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.

What red flags should I watch for when screening a CPA?

Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.

Should I choose a CPA from a large firm or a solo practitioner?

Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.

How often should I meet with my CPA?

For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.

Can a CPA help with both personal and business finances?

Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.

What should I do if I’m not satisfied with my CPA?

Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
