The worst experience I?ve had with a small business owner in 42 years. We contacted Thorpe 3 or 4 days before tax day to ask if he was able to take on our taxes. Thorpe informed us that he could, but he would probably have to file an extension. We informed him that we had multiple states that needed to be done and was curious about what his fee would be. His response was, and I quote, ?since you are only filing personal income taxes and no businesses, it will not be more than $400.? I honestly thought
My husband and I had the worst experience with Thorpe Peterson CPA. We contacted him just a few days before tax day, and he assured us he could handle our multiple state tax filings for no more than $400. Although we thought that was steep, we agreed due to our time constraints. After dropping off our documents, we were shocked to receive a call two weeks later stating our total fee was now $950. When we questioned the increase, he dismissed our concerns, saying filing multiple states is a hassle. This was
Thorpe Petersen does a great job doing my taxes every year. He's accurate and thorough. Thorpe takes to time to make sure every deduction is taken and gets you the max refund every time. Thorpe is also timely in providing information regarding any tax question you may have and can help with preparing financially for the future. He's very knowledgeable in with the tax codes and stays up to date with ever changing rules and regulations.
First off Thorpe is not related. He shares the same last name only. Thorpe has always been very thorough and fast. He is a true professional and has consistently done an excellent job with our taxes. I highly recommend Thorpe Peterson for all your taxes!
Thorpe has been serving our accounts for at least the last 8 - 10 years or maybe more.. It was really hard to find an accountant that we could trust and would set up our books at our location. Thorpe was very willing and thorough. Any questions we had he would answer and if he didn't know he would find the answer and always get back to us. Thorpe provided all services to run our business on track and in a timely manner. He's a good and trusting person that will guide you in the right direction with all
Thorpe Petersen has provided CPA services for us personally in addition to our businesses for about 20 years. He is highly trustworthy and cares for our business as if it were his. He has advised us through difficult and challenging times -- always with our highest interest in mind. He is prompt and thorough in his preparation. We have counted on him year after year to knowledgeably handle our unique circumstances. We are very grateful for his professionalism and the continuity through time he has provided
Over priced for only average service. Unpleasant person to deal with. Hung up on me during conversation.
Thorpe is an excellent tax prep resource. He guided my husband and I through some very complicated taxes and also offers an audit protection option. We really enjoyed working with him and will continue to in the future!
Extremely disappointed with the services received. Thorpe wasted my time by asking me multiple times to remind him of the services I needed. I was extremely patient with him by repeating my needs that should have been documented from our initial meeting. A meeting that I had to drive almost an hour to do in person since he does not use technology, at least did not provide that option with me. Had to drive all the way back there to pay him by check. He calls my office phone, instead of my cell phone that I
Recently, I had a consultation with Thorpe. His knowledge was a bit lacking in tax matters. I mean, he didn't tell me anything that I didn't know already. Instead, he printed me some tax forms, which anyone can download from internet.
I've been going to Thorpe Petersen for years to get my taxes done. He is thorough, fast and works with you to ensure the best outcomes every tax season. I highly recommend Thorpe to those looking for a solid and reputable accountant.
Thorpe went out of his way to complete my taxes in record time. He is immensely professional and a great guy. 100% recommend him for anyone looking to do their taxes quickly, professionally, and for a great accurate return.
I have not used Thorpe Petersen's professional services. I know him as a close friend, neighbor, and fellow church-goer. He is a man of the highest character; a man of integrity, honesty, and patience. If you're looking for someone who will deal with you openly and uprightly, Thorpe's your man.
Thorpe is the best CPA I have ever dealt with. He is prompt, attentive, spot on and will tell the truth about what what is going on and really do a great job! I will not use anyone else as long as he is in business!

Look for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, which ensures they’ve passed rigorous exams and meet state requirements. Check for relevant experience in your industry, additional certifications like CFA or CMA, and membership in professional organizations like the AICPA. Verify their credentials through state licensing boards.
Use online directories like the AICPA, CPAverify, or state CPA societies. Search platforms like Yelp or Google for local CPAs with reviews. Ask for referrals from business associates, friends, or financial advisors. Local chambers of commerce can also provide recommendations.
A CPA is a licensed professional who has passed the CPA exam and met state requirements for education and experience. An accountant may lack this certification and could have varying levels of expertise. For complex tasks like tax audits or financial reporting, a CPA is typically more qualified.
Ask about their experience with your specific financial needs, such as tax preparation, small business accounting, or estate planning. Review their website or LinkedIn for case studies or client testimonials. Inquire about their client base to ensure they handle similar financial situations.
Yes, reviews provide insight into a CPA’s reliability, communication, and performance. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or the Better Business Bureau for client feedback. Look for patterns in reviews, but verify their authenticity, as some may be biased or outdated.
Visit your state’s Board of Accountancy website or use CPAverify.org to check a CPA’s license status. Confirm their license is active and check for any disciplinary actions or complaints. This ensures they’re in good standing and meet professional standards.
Ask about their experience with your financial needs, fee structure, availability, and communication style. Inquire how they handle tax filings, audits, or financial planning. Ask for references or examples of similar work to assess their expertise and fit.
Fees vary based on location, services, and complexity. Basic tax preparation may cost $150-$500, while business accounting or audits can range from $1,000 to $10,000+. Request a detailed fee structure upfront and compare quotes from multiple CPAs.
Yes, many CPAs offer remote services through secure online platforms for document sharing and virtual consultations. Ensure they use encrypted tools for data security. Remote CPAs can be effective if they understand your local tax laws or business regulations.
During consultations, evaluate their ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly. Ask sample questions about taxes or financial strategies and note their responsiveness and clarity. Good communication ensures you understand their advice and fosters a productive relationship.
Beware of CPAs who guarantee specific tax refunds, lack a valid license, or have disciplinary actions on record. Avoid those with poor communication, vague fee structures, or negative reviews highlighting unethical behavior. Always verify their credentials independently.
Large firms offer more resources and specialized teams but may charge higher fees. Solo practitioners often provide personalized service and lower costs but may have limited availability. Choose based on your needs, budget, and preference for personalized attention.
For individuals, annual meetings for tax preparation may suffice. Businesses may need quarterly or monthly check-ins for bookkeeping, tax planning, or financial reporting. Discuss your needs upfront to establish a meeting schedule that aligns with your financial goals.
Yes, many CPAs handle both, but confirm their expertise in both areas. Ask about their experience managing personal taxes and business accounting simultaneously. Ensure they can balance both without compromising attention to your specific financial needs.
Discuss concerns directly with your CPA to resolve issues. If unresolved, check your contract for termination terms. Seek a new CPA by researching reviews, credentials, and referrals. Request your financial records to ensure a smooth transition to a new professional.
